Description
Pierre Chapo (1927–1987) S01 Set of three stools Elm Square seat, four tapered legs H46 W28 D28 cm Trained as an architect and a leading figure in post-war French furniture design, Pierre Chapo (1927–1987) developed a body of work from the 1960s onwards based on a celebration of solid wood and craftsmanship. Inspired by the principles of modernism as much as by traditional joinery techniques, he designed furniture with clean, rigorous lines, where beauty arises from the structure itself. His creations, produced in his workshops in Gordes and later in Clamart, now occupy a key place in the history of 20th-century French design. An iconic piece from Pierre Chapo’s repertoire, the S01 stool perfectly illustrates the principles underpinning his work: simplicity of form, structural integrity and the celebration of the material. Crafted from solid elm, these three stools feature a square seat resting on four tapered legs, whose balanced proportions reveal the care taken in the assembly details. Devoid of any superfluous ornamentation, the design highlights the richness of the wood’s grain and the quality of its craftsmanship. Robust, functional and sculptural in equal measure, the S01 has become one of Pierre Chapo’s most sought-after creations, embodying the excellence of French furniture from the 1960s and 1970s as well as a return to an aesthetic based on the nobility of materials and masterful craftsmanship.
