A Swedish ceramist, designer and sculptor, Gunnar Nylund (1904–1997) is considered one of the leading figures in 20th-century Scandinavian ceramics. After working for several European manufacturers, he joined the prestigious Swedish firm Rörstrand in 1931, where he became one of the principal artistic directors. His work is distinguished by its simplicity of form, inspiration drawn from the natural world and a remarkable mastery of glazes. Through both his functional pieces and his animal sculptures, Nylund made a significant contribution to the international reputation of Nordic design.
This figurine of a seal reflects Gunnar Nylund’s enduring interest in the animal world, a recurring source of inspiration in his work. Crafted in stoneware for the Rörstrand factory, it is distinguished by the simplicity of its forms and the softness of its lines, which sensitively capture the placid and endearing nature of the animal.
Stripped down to the essentials, the sculpture reveals Nylund’s ability to capture the essence of a subject through a few perfectly balanced forms. Somewhere between a decorative object and a small collector’s sculpture, this ‘Chubby Seal’ fully embodies the post-war Scandinavian aesthetic, where the observation of nature is combined with a constant quest for formal purity.
