Description
Georges Candilis (1913–1995) & Anja Blomstedt (born 1937) Slatted Chair Aluminium and ash Sentou Edition Date of creation: 1969 H77 W50 D42 cm Model created for the “Les Carrats” housing complex, Port Leucate, France Exhibition: Georges Candilis, Geometric Parallelism, Vasarely Foundation, February 2015 Greek architect (1913–1995) and Finnish designer, Georges Candilis and Anja Blomstedt collaborated in the 1960s and 1970s to create pieces of furniture combining structural rigour with Nordic sensibility. Their aluminium and ash slatted chair, produced by Sentou in 1969, was specifically designed for the “Les Carrats” accommodation in Port Leucate, an architectural complex emblematic of social tourism in France. Candilis, a member of Team X who challenged the dogmas of orthodox modernism, and Blomstedt, heir to the Finnish design tradition, developed an approach in which furniture and architecture engage in an intimate dialogue. This chair, exhibited at the Vasarely Foundation during the exhibition “Georges Candilis, geometric parallelism” in 2015, bears witness to their humanist vision of design in the service of social projects. The book “Candilis-Josic-Woods: Building for People” (Hatje Cantz, 2022) analyses their major contribution to 20th-century architecture and design.
