Description
Georges Candilis (1913–1995) and Anja Blomstedt (1937) – Coffee table Model from the “Les Carrats” housing complex, Port Leucate. Sentou edition, 1969 Aluminium and ash, collapsible construction. H66 W60 D66 cm This table belongs to the rare collection of furniture designed by Georges Candilis in the late 1960s, conceived as part of a comprehensive architectural programme for the seaside holiday village of Les Carrats. Unlike many architects who were content to simply specify furnishings, Candilis approached furniture as a direct extension of his urban and social vision — rational, adaptable and rooted in communal living. A leading figure in Team Ten, he helped to redefine post-war modernism by prioritising the human scale, modularity and new forms of housing. The Carrats commission represents a unique episode in his career: a fully integrated environment, where architecture and furniture were designed in close dialogue. Developed in collaboration with the Finnish designer Anja Blomstedt, this table reveals a synthesis between Mediterranean modernism and Nordic restraint. Its visual clarity stems from a particularly ingenious construction principle: elements in light ash are assembled using a specially designed curved aluminium bracket, which simultaneously serves as the structure, a connecting element and a graphic signature. The result achieves a subtle balance between the warmth of the material and industrial precision. While the form captivates with its apparent simplicity, the design reflects a highly mastered technical logic—dismantlable, material-efficient, robust in use—echoing the experimental spirit that drove late modernist research into standardised living environments. Furniture from the Carrats remains rare on the market, due in particular to the specific nature of the original commission and the limited production carried out by Sentou. Pieces from this range are now increasingly sought after, not only for their rarity, but also for their position at the crossroads of architecture, social utopia and furniture design. More than just a utilitarian object, this table can thus be understood as a micro-architectural statement: the condensed expression of Candilis’s conviction that modern life could be shaped by intelligent and honest construction.
