Description
Charlotte Perriand (1903–1999) Méribel No. 27 Set of four chairs Solid wood, original straw seats René Martin edition H76 W45 D42 cm Designed for the development of the Méribel resort, model No. 27 is one of Charlotte Perriand’s most iconic creations. Developed as part of her research into Alpine housing and mountain furniture, it perfectly illustrates her desire to reconcile modernity, structural simplicity and vernacular heritage. From the 1940s onwards, Charlotte Perriand took an interest in the unassuming forms of traditional Savoyard furniture, whose functional precision and economy of means she admired. The models designed for Méribel bear witness to this approach: the lines are reduced to the essentials, the materials remain authentic, and practicality takes precedence over any decorative effect. Model No. 27 stands out for the balance of its proportions, the simplicity of its structure and the warmth of its straw seat. The combination of solid wood and straw gives the piece a presence that is both rustic and resolutely modern, characteristic of Charlotte Perriand’s work. These examples retain their original straw seats, a feature particularly prized by collectors. Produced by René Martin, these chairs are among the most sought-after models from the Méribel furniture collection and embody one of the most accomplished fusions of traditional craftsmanship and modern design. Through this series, Charlotte Perriand demonstrates her unique ability to transform forms drawn from popular culture into icons of 20th-century design.
