Description
Christophe Gevers (1928–2007) A rare set of six decorative panels Veneered wood and Formica laminate Date of creation: 1976–1978 Comprising: two door panels, each 120 cm wide, and four decorative panels, each 115 cm wide H240 cm Provenance: Société Générale de Banque, Montagne du Parc, Brussels. Cornette de Saint Cyr auction, Brussels, June 2015. This set comes from the restaurant and staff canteen of the Société Générale de Banque in Brussels, one of the most significant institutional projects undertaken by Christophe Gevers during the 1970s. Between 1976 and 1978, Gevers was commissioned to design the dining areas at the bank’s headquarters, located on Montagne du Parc in the heart of Brussels. At that time, the designer was at the height of his career and was simultaneously working on several major projects for Belgian financial institutions, notably the Banque Bruxelles Lambert, the Crédit Communal de Belgique and the Passage 44. True to his concept of the ‘total work’, Christophe Gevers designed every element of his interiors: architecture, furniture, lighting, signage, partitions and decorative features. The dining areas at Générale de Banque perfectly illustrate this holistic approach, where industrial materials, coloured laminates, wood and geometric compositions combine to create a cohesive and welcoming environment designed to humanise the workspace. When the bank’s headquarters were demolished in the early 2010s, a major conservation effort made it possible to preserve part of the fittings designed by Christophe Gevers and Jules Wabbes. The recovered elements were dispersed on the market, making architectural ensembles preserved in their entirety particularly rare today. With their monumental dimensions, documented provenance and emblematic nature of Gevers’ aesthetic during his most prolific period, these panels constitute a valuable testimony to one of the most significant ensembles of Belgian interior architecture from the second half of the 20th century.
