Juan Orti is based in Valencia, Spain. He uses the potter’s wheel as a tool to create pieces designed to be assembled. This process lends the objects an apparent coldness, yet by reducing the amount of visual information, it focuses the viewer’s gaze on a few minute yet profound details.
Sculptural interpretations of geometric architectural forms that are omnipresent in our daily lives. The visual language of his work is of a refined beauty, lending elegance to industrial forms that are often austere and soulless. Do not expect to find superfluous ornamentation in Ortí’s creations. He uses the wheel and the potter’s wheel to recreate the purity of form found in the most functional manifestations of industrial or agricultural architecture, transforming simplicity and functionality into pure beauty. The texture of the objects, dry and soft, captures the light perfectly and gives the table-sized sculptures the illusion of monumental scale. Ortí does not completely erase the marks of the manufacturing process, but retains the subtle traces of the lathe’s machining, details that remind the viewer of the origin and true scale of their experience—a return to reality.
