Horizontal A
Pair of wall units
Wenge-stained oak, lacquered metal sliding panels
Produced by Pastoe (Netherlands)
Date of creation: 1999–2000
H17 W90 D18 cm (per module)
A rare pair of Horizontals A wall units, designed by the renowned Japanese designer Shigeru Uchida and produced by Pastoe. Part of Uchida’s famous Horizontals series, these modular units draw inspiration from traditional Japanese sliding doors, translating the concept into a refined and resolutely architectural storage system.
Unlike the more common aluminium versions, these pieces belong to the rare first production run in wood with lacquered metal sliding fronts. Unveiled at Uchida’s 1999 exhibition, this first generation is considered significantly rarer and more sought-after by collectors. The minimalist composition allows the sliding metal panels to continuously alter the room’s appearance, creating a perpetual interplay between open and closed spaces. Serving both as storage and as a wall sculpture, this design perfectly embodies Uchida’s characteristic fusion of Japanese minimalism and contemporary architectural thinking.
Produced by Pastoe in a very limited run, the first wooden models of Horizontal are extremely rare on the market.
A museum-worthy postmodern design and an exceptional opportunity for collectors.
