Serge Mouille
White upright floor lamp
Year of design: 1953
Serge Mouille edition
H190 W49 cm
Straight floor lamp in white lacquered steel. Serge Mouille edition. Model created in 1953. H 190 × W 49 cm.
The upright floor lamp (1953) is one of the first major creations by Serge Mouille (Paris, 1922–1988), a trained silversmith who became one of the greatest lighting designers of the 20th century. Its form — an articulated arm in black or white lacquered steel, ending in a conical shade — is characterised by absolute formal coherence and inventiveness. The white version, rarer than the black, lends the piece a particular lightness and sculptural presence. This light fixture features in the collections of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Centre Pompidou and the MoMA in New York. An absolute classic of French design, every example of which is a collector’s item.
