Description
Isamu Noguchi Akari 22N Lamp Washi paper and bamboo H63 W42 cm Early Model Sun and Moon. Pull-cord switch. Isamu Noguchi refers to his Akari as ‘light sculptures’ – a term translated by Steph Simon as ‘sculptures lumineuses’, a phrase whose delightful ambiguity also suggests ‘sculptures of light’. This ambiguity is no accident. It reflects the open-ended nature of these objects, situated between art and utility, between contemplation and everyday use. Lightweight, foldable, and diffusing a soft, enveloping glow, the Akari lantern reconciles traditional Japanese craftsmanship with the international modernity of post-war design. An example from the same series featured in the catalogue of the exhibition Alina Szapocznikow – Language of the Body, presented at the Musée de Grenoble.
