Description
Claudi Casanovas ...as if they had found a treasure they hadn’t known they had until the moment they lost it... Bas-relief White sandstone Date created: 2010 H113 W94 D3 cm This sandstone bas-relief was first exhibited at the exhibition Les Blanques, Montjoies per Odisseu (The Whites, Stones for Ulysses), held at the Hélène Porée Gallery in 2010. It forms part of a series of works in white sandstone created by the Spanish ceramicist Claudi Casanovas (born 1956). Each work in this exhibition takes its title from a passage in the novel *Odisseu* by the Catalan writer Agustí Bartra (1908–1982). The work presented here is titled ...as if they had stolen a treasure he hadn’t realised he possessed until the moment he lost it... (...As if a treasure had been stolen from him, one he had only realised he possessed at the moment of losing it...). This ceramic is characterised by a surface treatment created using impressions of pre-cut wooden reliefs, employed as a mould. The works in this series feature the double spiral motif, which the artist conceives as a simultaneous movement of going and returning. Designed as symbolic markers, each piece represents an episode in Ulysses’ journey and accompanies the hero on the path of his Odyssey. Another work in this series, ...el destí, vol que sigui immensa la ferida d’on naixerà ma mort., is held in the collections of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon (inv. 2022.8.1). Biography: Born in 1956 in Spain, Claudi Casanovas first studied theatre in Barcelona before turning to ceramics in Olot, Catalonia. He was a member of the Coure ceramics cooperative from 1978 to 1987. A leading Spanish ceramicist, his works are held in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum (London), the Hermitage Museum (Saint Petersburg), the National Gallery of Australia (Canberra) and the National Ceramics Museum in Sèvres.
