Designed by Walter Leeman and produced by Velda in 1972, the Zeppelin sofa is one of the most daring creations of Belgian design from the 1970s. With its
enveloping lines and monolithic form, it is fully in keeping with the formal explorations of the era, marked by the emergence of sculptural furniture prioritising comfort and visual expression.
Its organic design, characterised by generous curves and a floating silhouette, evokes the futuristic aesthetic that defined the early 1970s. The model illustrates the designers’ desire to transcend the conventions of traditional furniture to create objects with almost architectural qualities.
Produced in a run of just twenty pieces, the Zeppelin sofa ranks among Velda’s rarest creations. This extremely limited production run contributes today to its historical significance and its discreet presence on the
collectors’ design market.
This particular example has undergone a meticulous restoration, including new grey leather upholstery that remains faithful to the spirit of the design and its original proportions. The frame retains all its sculptural presence and bears witness to the quality of Belgian craftsmanship of that period.
Owing to its rarity, its spectacular design and its status as an iconic piece of 1970s Belgian design, the Zeppelin is now regarded as one of the most distinctive models produced by Velda.
