When encountering Federico Greca’s Move collection, the first instinct is to run one’s fingertips over the drape of the coated black fabric covering the pieces, so glossy that it appears liquid.
Combining echoes of the Renaissance with references to various areas of contemporary culture, this furniture collection was born of an intuition: whilst moving house, the designer noticed how all the furniture and objects wrapped in cellophane for protection took on a neutral, almost abstract appearance, suddenly becoming a pure volume, an essential design.
The pieces in the collection (tables, chairs and a mirror) evoke this precise moment, both real and symbolic.
The uniqueness of the final piece is the result of an experimental production process involving in-depth research into materials and object creation, aimed at recapturing the power of the initial inspiration whilst ensuring the durability and impeccable craftsmanship of the series. Particular mention should be made of the excellent results achieved in the application of the complex and consistently original textile covering, as well as in the construction of the coffee table’s structure—which appears unstable only at first glance—and the stool, which highlights the ironic aspect of the entire project.
What looks in every respect like an industrial metal bin, with its black bag sticking out, is in fact a bar stool designed down to the smallest detail, from the joinery to the light reflected by a small mirror concealed beneath the lid.
An interesting detail: each piece in the Move collection comes with an identification label, just like during a real move, which here contains essential information about the collection piece.
It is a balancing act, both in the reality of the objects and in the underlying theory, where the philosophy of form meets the ethics of function, and where refined Italian craftsmanship – here, exquisitely Piedmontese – becomes a universal language precisely thanks to its distinctive tension between past and present, which is typically local.
The result is an intimate, evocative and captivating aesthetic experience, the meaning of which is destined to be recognised even by people who are distant and different from one another.
