Description
Philippe Starck J. Lang Armchair Leather and aluminium Driade Date of creation: circa 1987 H85 W61 D66 cm Political design and playful postmodernism Philippe Starck, born on 18 January 1949 in Paris, is undoubtedly one of the most influential figures in contemporary design. This pair of Jack Lang armchairs, designed around 1987 in leather and aluminium for Driade, embodies Starck’s distinctive style: a blend of elegance, irreverence and innovation. Commissioned for the former French Minister of Culture Jack Lang, this furniture bears witness to the links between political power and the creative avant-garde in Mitterrand’s France. The 1980s marked Starck’s international breakthrough. Following the design of François Mitterrand’s private apartments at the Élysée Palace (1983), he created Café Costes (1984) and then Les Bains Douches, establishing his reputation as a creator of atmospheres. These J. Lang armchairs, with their exposed aluminium frame and generous leather upholstery, illustrate Starck’s approach: functionalism subverted by humour and theatricality. Driade, a prestigious Italian manufacturer founded in 1968, collaborates with leading international designers (Philippe Starck, Antonia Astori, Enzo Mari). This production guarantees high-quality craftsmanship and international distribution. The J. Lang armchairs represent an era in which French design and political power engaged in an intense dialogue, producing a ‘chic socialism’ style that defined the 1980s.
