Damien Gernay Black Sea Coffee table Leather and weathered steel Signed Year created: 2016 H36.5 W120 cm The Black Sea coffee table is inspired by the sea, both alluring and frightening, by its perpetual motion and its ever-changing appearance. With this piece, I have tried to capture the present moment, and to freeze a fragment of the sea’s surface forever. Leather was the obvious material for such an undertaking: leather is alive, can be moulded into any shape, and its texture shares with water its caustic effect. The tabletop thus comes to life and seems to move with the reflection of the light. A similar piece will be on display at the exhibition Damien Gernay: Nimesis, 14 July – 15 November 2026, Musée du Grand Hornu, Brussels, Belgium
