Description
Maarten Baas (1978) Chair Smoke series Charred wood, epoxy resin and leather Year: 2002 H103 W50.5 D56 cm Maarten Baas: Maarten Baas (1978) is a Dutch artist and designer who graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2002. His studio is based in 's-Hertogenbosch (Netherlands). Baas is considered one of the most influential artist-designers of the early 21st century. His works blur the boundaries between art and design. He occupies a unique position in this field, integrating conceptual art, craftsmanship, installation, public space and performance into his work. He is known for his rebellious, intellectual, theatrical and artistic style. His most famous works, Smoke, Clay and Real Time, brought him immediate international recognition. In 2009, he was named ‘Designer of the Year’ at Design Basel/Miami. In 2012, the New York Times ranked Smoke and Clay among the “25 design classics of tomorrow”. In 2016, Baas won the Artprize for his Real Time Sweepers clock. His works feature in the private collections of Brad Pitt, Adam Lindemann and Michael Ovitz, as well as in the permanent collections of museums such as MoMA (New York), MoMA (San Francisco), the Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam), the Stedelijk Museum (Amsterdam), the MAD (Paris), the Victoria & Albert Museum (London), the Die Neue Sammlung Museum (Munich), the Victoria Museum (Melbourne), the LACMA (Los Angeles), and many others. Produced by Moooi between 2003 and 2004, Maarten Baas’s Smoke chairs are crafted from premium leather and feature a burnt wood frame – a truly original and unique choice of materials. Smoke was Baas’s final-year project at the Design Academy Eindhoven, based on a thesis about beauty and perfection: “In nature, everything is in perpetual motion, which creates a certain beauty. Yet human beings tend to freeze things in time and preserve their original beauty. Smoke plays with these two perceptions of beauty.” After being charred, the chairs are preserved in a transparent epoxy resin, allowing them to regain their functionality. If necessary, they are reupholstered or repaired to restore them to their original condition. In 2004, the Moss Gallery in New York commissioned Maarten to curate a solo exhibition featuring burnt design classics. Pieces from the Smoke series feature in the collections of major museums, such as the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Groninger Museum.
