Bussoga’s work focuses on ceramic tiles, which they usually screen-print to create all kinds of patterns. However, in this collection, they have changed their method and are using a smooth tile cladding to cover the furniture. This technique involves cutting flat ceramic pieces using pliers. In addition to traditional pliers, they also use diamond-tipped discs and bits to shape the pieces. In 2024, the studio was selected to take part in an exhibition at the Madrid Design Festival, alongside other ‘rural designers’. Playing with the idea of rurality, Bussoga launched this collection of farm animals (pigs and sheep) which has continued to expand to include other species, such as cows, sharks and crocodiles.
Bussoga, led by Irina Grosu and Josep Motas, is a design studio that creates in a logical yet free-spirited manner in response to an unsustainable system. They blend mathematics, mural art and ceramics with surrealism, collaborating with major brands. Reinterpreting the folklore of tiling through a contemporary lens, they aspire to a democratic living environment, incorporating
social, political and ecological ideas. Their work critiques capitalism and mass consumption, and enriches the world through creativity, bridging the gap between tradition and innovation.
