Elisabet Urpí and Nacho Umpierrez form the duo behind ELIURPI, a Barcelona-based design studio renowned for its blend of tradition, architecture and contemporary art. Founded 14 years ago, ELIURPI began with sculptural hats and now offers furniture, lamps and art objects. Their 2024 exhibition, ‘Shadows and Poems’, at the Palazzo Litta in Milan, featured raffia works inspired by Tanizaki’s ‘In Praise of Shadows’. They work with natural materials and emphasise craftsmanship. Their pieces have been exhibited internationally, notably at ARCO Madrid, and they received an honourable mention at the 2023 Cheongju Biennale.
A light installation comprising two sculptures that interact, creating a dynamic interplay of light, reflections and shadows. Handcrafted from
natural raffia dyed black, the sculptures straddle the boundary between art and functional object. Together, they cast their forms onto one another, ultimately merging into a single coherent work. The sculptures are assembled using laces rather than screws, giving them a rigidity that is both subtle and robust. This meticulously crafted architectural piece features a unique design that harmoniously blends artistic expression and functionality.
