Sergio Rodrigues (1927–2014) Kilin Armchair Jacaranda wood and leather First original edition (Jacaranda wood) Date of creation: circa 1970 H69 W68 D62 cm Universally recognised as the father of modern Brazilian design, Sergio Rodrigues is the architect of a body of work as vast as it is inimitable. Born in 1927 in Rio de Janeiro, he initially devoted himself to interior design, notably designing the University of Brasília, the Palace of the Arches and the National Theatre. Whereas his contemporaries imported European furniture or imitated the Bauhaus, Rodrigues chose a different path: he favoured native Brazilian wood over metal, organic forms over straight lines, and comfort over cold minimalism. In 1955, he opened the Oca shop (‘hut’ in the indigenous language) in Ipanema, an alternative space open to innovative designs in interior furniture. Over the course of his long career, he produced more than 1,200 pieces of furniture designed for homes, offices, summer houses and even theatres. Each piece embodies the same ambition: to forge a distinctly Brazilian identity—sensual, warm and confident. The Kilin armchair consists of a wooden frame and a leather cover assembled with dowels and pins, a construction considerably lighter than Rodrigues’ other iconic armchairs. The bold design, with its wooden and leather elements appearing to float in the air, is crafted to cradle and envelop the body. But it is its name that says the most about its creator: Kilin is an adaptation of the affectionate nickname Rodrigues used for his wife Vera Beatriz: esquilinho, ‘little squirrel’ in Portuguese. An intimate yet iconic piece, which embodies all the sensitivity of a master in just a few slats of wood and a single panel of stretched leather.
