Two European exiles, a Brazilian encounter, and one of the most fruitful collaborations in South American modernism. Martin Eisler, an Austrian architect and designer, was one of those European creators who left the continent devastated by the Second World War to find refuge and inspiration in Brazil. Carlo Hauner, an Italian-born designer, settled in Brazil in 1948 and devoted himself to design, ceramics and textiles, before forging a decisive partnership with Eisler in 1953. Together, they founded Forma, an iconic design studio whose creations—characterised by the use of Brazilian woods, slender tubular metal frames and a distinctly tropical formal sensibility—would come to be recognised as the most accomplished expression of Brazilian modernism.
An absolute icon of modern Brazilian design, the Reversível is considered one of the most emblematic armchairs of Brazilian modernism. Its seat and backrest, with their organic, rounded contours, contrast with a linear black lacquered iron frame composed of intersecting rods of austere elegance. But it is its functional ingenuity that has made it legendary: as its name suggests, the armchair offers two distinct positions—upright for formal use, and semi-reclined for unashamed relaxation—thanks to its pronounced curvature. This clever design combines the minimalism of European modernism with the sensuality of Brazilian design forms. The tiny, precise brass legs lend the piece that airy lightness which sets it apart from all others.
