Description
Victor Roman (1937–1995) Sculptural coffee table Patinated bronze, thick elliptical glass top Signed Date of creation: circa 1970 Table: H34 W130 D80 cm Base only: H32 W74 D53 cm Condition: The bronze has a beautiful patina from use. The original glass top has a few light scratches consistent with the piece’s age. A rare bronze coffee table with a brown patina, resting on a sculpted base depicting a stylised female figure. The composition reflects the unique visual language developed by Victor Roman, in which the human figure is progressively reduced to a play of organic volumes and abstract tensions. The powerful sculptural presence of the base contrasts with the simplicity of the thick, elliptical glass top, creating a subtle dialogue between mass and transparency. This fusion of sculpture and furniture, characteristic of the artist’s work from the 1960s onwards, lends the piece a dimension that is both functional and monumental. The bronze base bears the artist’s handwritten signature. The original top is preserved. A sculptor of Romanian origin based in France, Victor Roman established himself from the 1960s onwards as one of the leading figures of post-war European sculpture. His work, informed by the study of the human body and natural forms, oscillates between figuration and abstraction in a constant quest for balance and formal synthesis. At the crossroads between artist’s furniture and free-standing sculpture, this coffee table aptly illustrates Victor Roman’s ability to integrate sculptural form into the domestic space. Creations of this kind, produced in limited numbers, remain particularly sought-after for their sculptural quality and architectural presence
