Exceptional for its size and sculptural presence, this wall light exemplifies the unique approach developed by Fred Brouard, straddling the boundaries of furniture, sculpture and the decorative arts.
A leading figure in French design of the 1970s, Fred Brouard developed a visual vocabulary inspired by organic forms and movement. His work, characterised by free and expressive modelling, is a continuation of the sculptural explorations that defined the decorative arts of the second half of the 20th century.
Created in 1976, this large wall sconce is distinguished by an asymmetrical composition animated by fluid volumes and powerful reliefs. The interplay between gilded bronze and patinated metal accentuates the contrasts in material and reinforces the architectural dimension of the piece. The light, discreetly integrated into the structure, highlights the interplay of shadows and surfaces, transforming the functional object into a true luminous sculpture.
Whilst Fred Brouard is today chiefly known for his coffee tables and sculptural bronze creations, lighting pieces of this significance remain particularly rare on the market. Their limited production and experimental nature confer upon them a unique place within his body of work.
This example is signed and numbered 8/50, attesting to its status as part of a limited edition. With its monumental scale, the quality of its craftsmanship and the richness of its patina, this wall light stands as a remarkable testament to French sculptural design of the 1970s.
At the crossroads of abstract expressionism and the decorative arts, this work perfectly illustrates
Fred Brouard’s desire to integrate sculpture into the living space, making light an integral part of the form.
