Description
Victor Roman (1937–1995) Sculptural floor lamp Polished bronze and raw silk shade One-off piece Hand-signed "Roman" on the base Date of creation: circa 1970 H185 cm (with lampshade), H170 cm (without) Base: H35 W33 cm Lampshade: H50 cm Condition: Very good condition. Slight signs of wear on the bronze consistent with its age. Main lampshade made to match the original model in raw silk. Original lampshade retained and included with the piece. Straddling the boundary between monumental sculpture and lighting, this remarkable floor lamp perfectly illustrates Victor Roman’s exploration of the human figure and its gradual abstraction. A sculptor of Romanian origin based in France, Victor Roman established himself in the 1960s as one of the leading figures of post-war European sculpture. His work, informed by a constant reflection on the human body, develops a personal language in which the figure is progressively synthesised into powerful, organic volumes. This street lamp is a particularly rare example of his work applied to the decorative arts. Crafted in polished bronze, the monumental base evokes a nude female silhouette whose forms are reduced to the essentials. The composition retains all the expressive power characteristic of the artist, whilst subtly incorporating a lighting function. The quality of the modelling, the sensuality of the curves and the balance of the forms bear witness to Victor Roman’s sculptural mastery. The bronze, worked with great finesse, captures the light and accentuates the play of reflections on the polished surfaces. The conical lampshade in raw silk, crafted identically to the original model, harmoniously extends the slenderness of the sculpture and contributes fully to the elegance of the whole. The original lampshade, in rust-orange raw silk, is also included with the piece. Hand-signed ‘Roman’, this unique piece reflects the artist’s interest in integrating sculpture into the domestic space. Lighting of this quality remains particularly rare within his oeuvre and occupies a unique place in the history of sculptural furniture from the 1970s. With its exceptional dimensions, architectural presence and the power of its composition, this floor lamp stands out as one of Victor Roman’s most spectacular achievements in the field of decorative arts.
