Description
Ugo La Pietra (born 1938) Amore Mediterraneo Vase Sicilian ceramics Hand-signed and dated "Ugo La Pietra 2000" Date of creation: 2000 H32 D16 cm Part of a collection of vases inspired by Sicilian cacti. An architect, designer, artist and leading theorist of Italian radical design, Ugo La Pietra has, since the 1960s, developed a multifaceted body of work at the intersection of art, architecture and design. A two-time winner of the Compasso d’Oro, he occupies a unique place in contemporary Italian design through his commitment to craftsmanship and the cultural significance of objects. Created in 2000, this vase belongs to the Amore Mediterraneo series, a research project launched in the early 1990s exploring the forms, symbols and imagery of the Mediterranean basin. Inspired by the prickly pears that dot the Sicilian landscape, this series translates an organic vocabulary into ceramics, where nature becomes a metaphor for human relationships and Mediterranean cultural identity. The sculptural silhouette of the piece, both playful and architecturally structured, demonstrates Ugo La Pietra’s ability to combine formal experimentation with traditional craftsmanship. Crafted in Sicilian ceramics using local techniques, it illustrates the artist’s enduring interest in vernacular forms and their reinterpretation within the realm of contemporary design. The ceramics from the Amore Mediterraneo series were exhibited in several exhibitions dedicated to Mediterranean culture and are now among the most iconic creations of this period of his work.
