Description
Arne Norell (1917–1971) Sirocco model Armchair Teak and Pierre Frey fabric Arne Norell AB edition Year of design: 1964 H71 W64 D66 cm Sirocco armchair in solid teak and Pierre Frey fabric (reupholstered). Arne Norell AB edition (Sweden), 1964. H 71 × W 64 × D 66 cm. Arne Norell (1917–1971) was one of the most original Swedish designers of the post-war period. His Sirocco armchair (1964) — whose name evokes the hot wind from the desert — is an extraordinary synthesis of the tradition of colonial furniture (the safari chair, the camp chair) and the values of Scandinavian design: formal simplicity, quality of materials, functional comfort. The lightweight, dismantlable solid teak frame and the canvas stretched over the frame create a dialogue of materials of great elegance. The fabric by Pierre Frey, a luxury textile manufacturer, further enhances the piece. A rare work by a designer whose international reputation is rapidly growing.
