Description
Poul Kjærholm (1929–1980) PK9 Set of seven chairs Steel and tan leather First edition by E. Kold Christensen Date of creation: circa 1960 H76 W60 D56 cm Designed in the late 1950s, the PK9 is one of Poul Kjærholm’s most iconic creations. Nicknamed the ‘Tulip Chair’ due to its organic, enveloping silhouette, this chair perfectly illustrates the Danish designer’s vision, based on the pursuit of essential forms and the rigorous use of fine materials. The shell, with its fluid and sculptural lines, rests on an exquisitely delicate metal frame. The balance between the visual lightness of the steel and the warmth of the leather lends the piece a timeless elegance, characteristic of Kjærholm’s work. The exceptional quality of the design allows the chair to offer remarkable comfort whilst retaining a strong architectural presence. These examples belong to the first edition produced by E. Kold Christensen, Poul Kjærholm’s long-standing publisher and a key figure in the dissemination of his work prior to Fritz Hansen taking over production. Models from this early period are particularly sought after for the quality of their craftsmanship and their significance in the history of Scandinavian design. Owing to their rarity, their provenance and their condition, these chairs constitute a remarkable collection of post-war Danish furniture. They bear witness to Poul Kjærholm’s unique ability to combine structural rigour, refined materials and sculptural purity.
