Description
Oleg Kulik The Mad Dog Performance Black-and-white photograph Print on Hahnemühle paper Print from the edition 1/9 Date created: 1994 H30 W40 cm Provenance: Krinzinger Gallery, Vienna A certificate of authenticity will be provided to the buyer. A leading figure in international contemporary art, Oleg Kulik established himself in the early 1990s as one of the most radical figures on the post-Soviet art scene. His performances, which explore the boundaries between humanity and animality, have left a profound mark on the history of contemporary performance art. Created in 1994, The Mad Dog Performance is one of the most iconic works of his career. Through his ‘man-dog’ persona, the artist portrays a deliberately marginal and uncontrollable figure, revealing the social and identity-related tensions that characterised the post-Soviet era. This seminal performance remains today one of the most recognisable images of 1990s Russian Actionism. This print documents one of the most striking moments of this now historic performance. The narrative force of the scene, the frontal composition and the dramatic intensity of the black and white give the image a visual power that far exceeds that of a mere performance document, elevating it to the status of an autonomous work. Distributed by Galerie Krinzinger, the artist’s long-standing partner in Europe, this photograph belongs to one of the most significant bodies of work by Kulik and bears witness to a decisive period in international contemporary art.
