Description
Maximilian Michaelis Elusive perception Light sculpture Belgian blue stone, polished stainless steel, acrylic glass, LED The Elusive Nature of Human Perception series H55 W39 D27 cm Born in rural Germany and based in the Netherlands, Maximilian Michaelis has developed a unique practice at the intersection of art, design and sculpture, playing with reflection, perception and materials to create objects that challenge our interpretation of reality. A designer at the intersection of art and design, his light fittings, mirrors and wall sculptures constantly challenge our perception of objects. Represented by Galerie Gosserez in Paris and Galerie Philia, his works feature in international private collections. His approach can be summed up in a single sentence, which he himself formulates with disarming precision: “What we see and what we make of it is always elusive and subjective.” The Elusive collection, designed and created by Maximilian Michaelis, presents a series of sculptural pieces combining geometric and organic forms. From lamps to wall sculptures and mirrors, each piece in the collection surprises us with its ability to disrupt and challenge our perception of the object we are looking at. In each of these works, acrylic glass rods emerge in straight lines or spectacular curves from sculptures of Belgian blue stone and polished stainless steel; the light source seems to play tricks on the eye, multiplying or vanishing into space. Here, light is not merely a tool for illumination: it is the very material of the work, the medium through which reality eludes us. Viewed head-on, the piece reveals its structure; viewed from an angle, it dissolves. The Belgian blue stone anchors to the ground what the acrylic glass and LED dissolve upwards: a tension between gravity and immateriality, between the solid and the light, between what we think we see and what eludes us.
