Description
Piergil Fourquié Mursi Coffee table Blown glass, lacquered steel and screen-printed leather Tribu Collection Year of creation: 2016 H30.5 D60 cm (tabletop) Born in 1979 in Paris, Piergil Fourquié graduated from ENSAAMA (Olivier de Serres) and then from the Birmingham Institute of Art and Design with honours in 2002. A leading figure in the new wave of French design and a founding member of the French Design Federation, he gained extensive creative experience working with renowned agencies before launching his own studio, collaborating successively with Arik Levy and then with Philippe Starck, for whom he developed industrial products and furniture between 2013 and 2015. His eclectic and boundless inspirations explore the field of design in great depth, ranging from handcrafted objects to exquisite bottles, via graphic identity, scenography and pattern design, readily making way for dreams, emotion and sensuality. In 2011, Galerie Gosserez commissioned his first pieces of high-end furniture, marking the start of a long and fruitful collaboration. The Tribu collection is an exploration of the concept of tribe applied to the design of everyday objects: just as certain tribes in Sub-Saharan Africa have a tradition of tattooing their entire face or body, here the motif enhances pieces with simple, geometric forms. Mursi is a coffee table showcasing the craftsmanship, quality and tradition of the master glassmakers of Nový Bor in the Czech Republic, who specialise in Bohemian crystal. Its cantilevered top is a metal disc sheathed in leather screen-printed with metallic pigments. The interplay of forms is striking: the luminous, reflective mass of the blown glass bubble seems to levitate beneath a top that appears to be held up by nothing, an apparent, almost illusory balance between raw material and designed lightness
