There is something in Michel Haillard’s work that evokes a cabinet of curiosities, a shaman and a master cabinetmaker. Trained at the École Supérieure des Arts Modernes, he began his career as an advertising model maker before turning to animation, where he was the director, graphic designer and co-scriptwriter of the series Sharky and Georges, and then to sculpture and furniture design, in a style sometimes described as neo-tribal. In his studio, he is Belleville’s flamboyant alchemist: he collects the most diverse materials (bronze, hides, horns, wood, stones, bones, horsehair, second-hand objects) and repurposes them to create a piece of furniture, an ornament or an object that tends to become a unique sculpture. He has been collecting these materials for years during his explorations, combining the undeniable naturalness of his materials with the refinement of bronze, amber or crystal. Admired by Philippe Starck, his works adorn the world’s most discerning interiors and are regularly featured in international auction houses.
