Senufo Maternity Figure Sculpture Wood with a dark, glossy patina from wear Ivory Coast, 20th century H58 cm This remarkable Senufo maternity sculpture depicts a seated woman holding a large circular bowl above her head, supported by two long vertical arms of great architectural elegance. The figure, hieratic and frontal, is distinguished by the geometric power of its composition and by the refined balance between solid volumes and taut lines. The face, rendered with great formal restraint, displays the classic characteristics of Senufo statuary: half-closed almond-shaped eyes, an elongated triangular nose, a protruding, slightly parted mouth, and discreet scarifications on the cheeks.
