Description
Lobi statue Sculpture Heavy wood with a nuanced brown patina indicative of ritual use, traces of weathering and ancient ritual deposits Burkina Faso, early 20th century H64 cm A significant anthropomorphic male figure carved from heavy wood, displaying the slender, hieratic silhouette characteristic of Lobi statuary. The elongated body, reduced to its essential forms, is animated by a remarkable vertical tension. The angular shoulders dominate the arms, which are slightly detached from the torso, accentuating the figure’s momentum, whilst the powerful legs lend the whole a monumental presence despite its modest dimensions. The spherical head, supported by a short cylindrical neck, features deliberately simplified features: eyes reduced to fine horizontal slits, a protruding, slightly parted mouth, and ears in slight lateral relief. This formal simplification lends the sculpture a meditative intensity and a unique expressive power. The ancient surface reveals a patina of ritual use mixed with sacrificial deposits, bearing witness to long-term use within the domestic altars of the Lobi people. The visible wear and erosion, particularly at the lower extremities, fully contribute to the work’s authenticity and historical presence. With its sculptural simplicity and archaic power, this sculpture ranks among the most iconic works of the early 20th-century Lobi world.
