Dogon Statue
Sculpture
Heavy wood with a deep brown patina
Mali, 20th century
H42 cm
An elegant seated female figure displaying the architectural composition characteristic of certain Dogon sculptures from the Bandiagara Escarpment. The face, constructed with rigorous geometry, is distinguished by a prominent triangular nose, pursed lips and a protruding chin. The openwork headdress supports a circular bowl-shaped vessel.
The body, rendered with great verticality, is punctuated by elongated arms framing the torso and by a succession of motifs engraved in a frieze around the waist. The bent legs contribute to the dynamic balance of the whole. The surface displays a beautiful warm brown patina, smoothed by handling and the passage of time.
This sculpture captivates with the balance of its volumes and the monumental simplicity of its design, characteristics of 20th-century Dogon aesthetics.
