Description
Juliette Somnolet
The Flower with a Rifle
Sculpture
Ceramic, beeswax, artificial flower
Created using a firing technique uncommon amongst ceramicists, this piece is bisque-fired at just 600 degrees. The integrity of the sculpture is achieved using a Roman ceramic technique, in which it is dipped in a bath of beeswax at the end of firing, sealing the chalky texture. To crown these sorcerer’s apprentice chimeras, Juliette Somnolet goes in search of branches. She sets off to forage in the streets of Paris, but as a storm had lashed the city the day before, the streets are devoid of branches; returning empty-handed, her foot stumbles upon three fake green flowers, lost in the city—there lies the expected touch of greenery.
