Masahiro Wadayama is renowned for ceramics that combine vibrant colours, elegant forms and a masterful command of flowing glazes. An award-winning ceramist based in Wakayama, he works with Japanese porcelain—which is denser and less porous than traditional earthenware—and selects vibrant colours, including Japanese indigo blue, to illuminate each surface. Fascinated by the unpredictability of molten glazes, he channels his artistic sensibility into each piece to reveal the diversity and beauty of ceramics.
Masahiro Wadayama
Born in Osaka in 1985, Masahiro Wadayama studied at the University of South Dakota, where he specialised in English literature and began training in pottery. On returning to Japan, he apprenticed with the ceramic artist Kazuyo Hiruma. In 2019, he moved to Wakayama to devote himself fully to his career as a potter.
The recipient of numerous awards, including at the Kyoto Togei Biennale and the Kikuchi Biennale, Wadayama creates pieces which, whilst appearing as art ceramics, are designed for everyday use. A refined expression of everyday pottery.
Wadayama’s material of choice is Amakusa porcelain, sourced from the Saga region of Japan. More durable and less porous than traditional earthenware, this material is practical and ideal for making everyday objects—the very purpose for which he creates his pieces.
Often using Japanese indigo, the vibrant yet delicate glaze that covers the durable porcelain creates a poetic juxtaposition, as Wadayama explores the concept of contradictions in his works. Thanks to subtle yet striking details, visible only up close, each piece reveals a new surprise with every glance: a touch of gold dust, a different shade, rich textures—both matt and glossy… His taste for contradictions and harmony is thus clearly evident.
Nature surrounds Wadayama in her ceramics studio overlooking the ocean. Perhaps the fluid patterns of her glazes are influenced by the ceaseless movement of the tides.
