Description
Marc Newson (1963) W< (Wild & Lethal Trash) Chair Chair White polypropylene Kiss the Furniture series Edited by Walter van Beirendonck Date of creation: 1996–1997 H81 W48 D58 cm The artist: Marc Newson (1963-) is an Australian-American designer recognised as one of the most important and influential figures of the late 20th century and the early decades of the 21st century. Born in Sydney, Newson undertook numerous journeys across Europe and Asia from a young age. His portfolio spans a wide range of disciplines, and his clients include some of the world’s most prestigious and renowned brands. His expertise extends to the design of furniture, household goods, luxury products and interior design, demonstrating a mastery that spans fields such as technology, the use of innovative materials, aeronautics, marine design and the automotive industry. Constantly striving to blur the boundaries between art and design, Marc Newson has skilfully integrated functionality into his creations. His ability to harmoniously incorporate technology and explore unconventional materials is remarkable and lends his work an undeniable uniqueness. Newson’s unique approach reflects a deep understanding of contemporary aesthetics whilst paying homage to the rich history of modern and postmodern design that preceded his innovative contributions. Drawing on his creative spirit and innovative vision, Belgian fashion designer Walter van Beirendonck (1957-) commissioned industrial designer Marc Newson (1963-) to devise a retail concept for his brand W.&L.T. (Wild & Lethal Trash), to be rolled out across his numerous boutiques throughout Europe. This whimsical chair was part of the Kiss the Future collection, characterised primarily by its modular display system. Comprising transportable furniture elements, these multifunctional modules could be easily transformed into boutiques, pop-up stores and exhibition stands. Marc created a range of brightly coloured plastic display modules: red, yellow, blue, green, black and white. Their versatility is fully revealed in their practical use. The elements of the modular system were arranged to showcase the flagship products. When closed, these modules slotted together easily, forming a closed box that concealed the interior of the compartments. In addition, Marc Newson designed tables and chairs in the same aesthetic vein as the exhibition modules. Designed to be functional, these chairs make full use of the technical properties of the polypropylene used. Manufactured using rotational moulding, they are made from polypropylene. This process gives them great strength and excellent impact resistance, and allows for the creation of large hollow shapes without the need for additional assembly. The piece is signed ‘W.&.L.T. shop concept designed by Marc Newson W.&.L.T. Kiss the Future’.
