Sculptor, ceramist, metalworker, multimedia artist and designer: Marcello Fantoni is one of the most versatile and distinctive figures in 20th-century Italian applied art. Born in Florence in 1915, he enrolled at the Porta Romana Art Institute at the age of twelve to study ceramics under Carlo Guerrini, artistic director of the famous Cantagalli factory. After graduating in 1934, he founded his own workshop in Florence, Ceramiche Fantoni, which enjoyed remarkable success from 1937 onwards at the Decorative Arts Exhibition. His sculptures combine a resolutely contemporary aesthetic with deep historical references, such as Etruscan ceramics. His works are held in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, the Museo Nazionale del Bargello and the Gabinetto dei Disegni e delle Stampe at the Uffizi in Florence.
This earthenware table lamp illustrates Fantoni’s ability to imbue everyday objects with the full richness of his artistic vision. The base is not merely a support: it is a sculpture in its own right, designed to exist independently of its function. Throughout his long career, Fantoni created works for churches, public and private buildings, and ships, establishing himself in both figurative and abstract ceramics, but also, more intimately, in these domestic pieces where the artist’s touch slips into everyday life.
