Description
Daphna Laurens Taffelstukken Table lamp Oak and porcelain Limited edition of 15. Sold out. H45 D40 cm Provenance: Galerie Gosserez, Paris Born in 1982 and 1984 respectively, Daphna Isaacs and Laurens Manders belong to the prolific generation to emerge from the renowned Design Academy in Eindhoven. No sooner had they set up their studio than a prestigious award, the ‘Three out of Ten’ DMY Award in Berlin, crowned this promising duo, creators of the Taffelstukken lamp series. The Taffelstukken collection proved pivotal in their career: it was this that caught the attention of Cappellini, and later Poltrona Frau. The studio aspires to merge applied arts and fine arts, works on products that are as poetic as they are industrial, strives to create a seemingly effortless quality, and refuses to compromise artistically. Their creative process—first working on lines, volumes and surfaces through drawing, collage and modelling, and only then considering function—bears the hallmark of a studio whose pieces do not immediately reveal their purpose. Taffelstukken, literally ‘table pieces’ in Dutch, but also, as a play on words, ‘conversation pieces’, is the founding collection of the Daphna Laurens studio. The lamp consists of a base and a neck in solid oak, topped by a porcelain shade and an integrated bowl-shaped tray. The five illuminated objects in the collection “shine as much on themselves as on the objects placed within them”: a Taffelstuk can serve as a container to showcase everyday items — keys, fruit, a magazine. The ceramic components are pigment-stained, sanded and then oiled to achieve a matt finish with a very soft tactile feel. All pieces have been handcrafted in the studio’s workshop in Eindhoven.
