Huib Hoste (1881 – 1957) Pair of garden armchairs Special commission for a private residence in Hasselt, circa 1930 Lacquered steel tubing and original webbing. H. 82 × W. 71 × D. 58 cm . Rare examples of furniture designed by Huib Hoste for one of his private architectural projects, these armchairs illustrate the modernist ambition of a holistic work in which architecture, interior design and furniture form part of a single aesthetic project. A leading architect of Belgian modernism, Huib Hoste played a fundamental role in introducing modern architecture to Belgium alongside Victor Horta and Henry van de Velde. An early advocate of functionalist principles, he was involved from the 1920s onwards in promoting the European avant-garde and collaborated notably with Le Corbusier on a project in Antwerp in 1933. This pair of armchairs comes from a private residence designed by Huib Hoste in Hasselt in the 1930s, one of the few architectural complexes realised by the architect in the region. True to his holistic approach to the project, Hoste also designed the interior layout and the furniture. Designed specifically as garden furniture for this residence, these armchairs were produced in very limited numbers, with only twenty examples made. Their design displays remarkable modernity: a tubular metal frame with continuous lines supports a taut seat and backrest, in a style reminiscent of contemporary European experiments with tubular furniture. These examples retain their original paintwork. The frame shows a patina of wear consistent with the age of the set, accompanied by superficial traces of oxidation without any compromise to its structural integrity. The original seats and backrests have been preserved. The armrests, originally covered in black synthetic upholstery which has since disappeared, have undergone a respectful restoration involving the integration of black-stained wooden components, in keeping with the model’s original appearance. Owing to their direct provenance, their exceptional rarity and their status as furniture designed for a specific architectural project, these armchairs constitute a particularly important testament to the work of Huib Hoste and the history of Belgian modernism.
