Description
Arne Jacobsen (1902–1971) Egg Chair – model 3317 Aluminium and leather Produced by Fritz Hansen Year of design: 1958 H106 W89 D65 cm Arne Jacobsen’s Egg Chair is, without a doubt, one of the ten most famous and desirable pieces of design in the world. Designed in 1958 for the Royal Hotel SAS in Copenhagen — the first hotel in history to feature total design — it revolutionised chair design with its enveloping fibreglass shell covered in foam, offering remarkable privacy in a public space. Produced continuously since 1958 by Fritz Hansen, a Danish firm founded in 1872, it features in the permanent collections of MoMA in New York, the Design Museum in Copenhagen, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Referenced in the bibliography Danish Chairs (Noritsugu Oda, 1999, p. 60), this example in leather and chrome-plated aluminium comes with valuable documentation. At the proposed estimate, this is a rare opportunity to acquire one of the absolute icons of global design. Bibliography: Danish Chairs, Noritsugu Oda, 1999, p. 60
