Description
Arne Jacobsen (1902–1971) The Giraffe Armchair Birch frame, laminated wood legs, original green wool upholstery Original design for the SAS Royal Hotel, Copenhagen, 1958 Produced by Fritz Hansen H104 W61 D58 cm Designed by Arne Jacobsen as part of his famous ‘total design’ concept for the SAS Royal Hotel (now the Radisson Collection Royal Hotel) in the late 1950s, the Giraffe armchair was produced only in a limited edition exclusively for the hotel and was never sold to the public at the time. The Giraffe armchair illustrates Jacobsen’s experimental approach to form and manufacture, developed in collaboration with Fritz Hansen, which had recently acquired new technology enabling the creation of a one-piece upholstered seat shell. Several variants were designed for the hotel, including the version intended for the restaurant — recognisable by its green upholstery, wooden edging and laminated wooden legs — of which this example is a rare surviving specimen.
