Designed in 1999, the Horizontals series reinterprets the traditional Japanese fusuma (sliding partition) through the language of contemporary industrial design. Made entirely from anodised aluminium, the unit features two precision-engineered sliding doors that open in both directions, creating ever-changing geometric compositions whilst concealing the storage compartment. Originally conceived as a storage solution for compact discs, the CD model transcends its original function and now serves as a sculptural wall unit, a floating shelf and an architectural storage element. The purity of its proportions, the finesse of its engineering and its discreet wall-mounting system perfectly embody Uchida’s philosophy, where functionality, craftsmanship and spatial harmony merge into a timeless object. Produced by Pastoe in anodised aluminium, the Horizontals A-Line collection was manufactured for a limited period only and is increasingly sought after by collectors of Japanese design, minimalism, postmodern design and collectable design.
