Jan Van Lierde (1926–2006) Atreo Pair of floor lamps Aluminium and painted metal Produced by Artemide, Italy 2000 H185 W39 D31 cm (each) In very good original condition, showing only slight signs of age and wear. Both floor lamps are in working order, including the upper light sources and the lower blue ones. A striking pair of Atreo floor lamps, designed by the Belgian architect and lighting designer Jan Van Lierde for the Italian manufacturer Artemide in 2000. The floor lamps feature a rigorous architectural form, comprising two tall aluminium profiles rising from rectangular, dark grey metal bases. Their understated, monolithic appearance is brought to life by two contrasting light sources: warm indirect lighting at the top illuminates the wall and ceiling, whilst a blue light integrated into the base casts an atmospheric glow onto the floor. The combination of warm indirect light and saturated blue accent lighting gives the Atreo a sculptural presence, even when viewed from a distance. Each light source can be operated independently, allowing the floor lamps to provide functional indirect lighting, ambient floor lighting, or both simultaneously. Jan Van Lierde (born in 1954) is a Belgian architect, designer and entrepreneur specialising in architectural lighting. After graduating in architecture from Ghent in 1978, he went on to set up his own practice. In 1982, he founded the lighting company Kreon and subsequently collaborated with internationally renowned manufacturers, notably Artemide. His designs are characterised by architectural simplicity and a particular focus on the relationship between light, the object and space. An elegant and unusual pair of architectural floor lamps, particularly effective when positioned symmetrically within an interior.
