Description
YOON SHUN (born 1984) Waves in Object Sculptural shelving unit / functional sculpture Brushed aluminium, hand-bent and shaped Designed in 2023–2024
Dimensions: to be confirmed A spectacular structure made of aluminium sheets forming three superimposed levels, held in place between two vertical uprights with curved ends. With the Waves in Object series, Yoon Shun develops a vocabulary at the intersection of furniture and sculpture. Thin 3 mm aluminium sheets are worked and curved to create a succession of undulating lines, the tension of which contributes directly to the structure’s stability. The supple, continuous curves contrast with the industrial character of the aluminium and lend the piece an architectural yet organic presence. The Korean designer, based in Antwerp, describes his own creations as ‘domesticated sculptures’ – objects designed to retain a function whilst also being perceived as standalone works of art. The Waves in Object series is now considered one of Yoon Shun’s signature creations. The Shelf model was notably featured in his solo exhibition *Let’s start here* at the Hioco Delany Gallery in Antwerp in 2024. Yoon Shun’s work has since been included in the collections of the Boghossian Foundation and Delen Private Bank, amongst others. The artist has also taken part in Collectible and, in 2024, received the Wallpaper* Design Award for ‘Best Scene Setters’. Bibliography: ‘Waves in Object’, ‘Shelf’ model featured in *The World of Interiors*, 2023
