Lives and works in Newark, New Jersey. Weinberger’s work is rooted in an exploration of her Caribbean-American heritage. It draws heavily on the complexity of cultural heritage and presumed norms. Referencing her own memories of adolescence and our current xenophobic zeitgeist, Weinberger depicts her female muses across a whole spectrum of character types. Some are over-the-top, sexualised and eccentric, whilst others are passive or dominant, forming a collection of figures that ultimately question the norms and psychology of beauty and identity. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally in numerous group and solo exhibitions by invitation. Weinberger has participated five times in the Jamaica Biennial, from 2006 to 2017, held in Kingston, Jamaica; and her work was also featured at the Martinique Biennial in 2013. She has received several awards, residencies and grants, including: the Joan Mitchell Foundation’s Painters and Sculptors Grant in 2014; an artist residency at the Joan Mitchell Centre in New Orleans in 2015; a grant from the New Jersey State Council of the Arts in 2016; an artist-in-residence programme at the Project for Empty Space in Newark, NJ, in 2017–2018; the Dawn Scott Memorial Award, presented by the National Gallery of Jamaica and Edward M. Gomez, in 2019; the McMillan Stewart Endowed Chair in Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2019–2020; and artist-in-residence status at the Sunroom Project at Wave Hill, Bronx, NY, in 2020 (opening postponed to May 2021 due to the pandemic). She is once again holding the McMillan Stewart Endowed Chair in Painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art for the 2020–2021 academic year. Her works are held in the following public collections: the New Jersey State Museum, Trenton, NJ; the Newark Museum of Art, Newark, NJ; the Sagamore Collection, Miami, FL; the Girls Club Collection, Fort Lauderdale, FL; the Margulies Collection, Miami, FL; Davidson College, Davidson, NC; and the AC Kingston Collection, Kingston, Jamaica.
