Description
Pascal Mourgue (1943–2014) Atlantique Two chairs Black lacquered tubular metal base, black lacquered wooden seat, backrest in black lacquered perforated metal Artelano edition Circa 1987 H83.5 W46 D49.5 cm Pascal Mourgue, born in 1943 in Neuilly-sur-Seine and died in 2014 in Montreuil, was a French designer from a family deeply immersed in the world of design, seeking new applications for established techniques. He graduated from the École Boulle and the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Décoratifs, as did his brother Olivier Mourgue, whom he admired. The designer received numerous national and international awards, including the Grand Prix National de la Création Industrielle from the Ministry of Culture in 1996. The designer’s style, assertive yet understated, reflects a desire to move away from the principles of modernism and to continually seek out furniture that stands out, whilst embracing simplicity. His work is characterised by an economy of means. This philosophy – the purity of lines – is inseparable from drawing, Mourgue’s preferred method for designing his pieces. From this drawing emerges the need to actually construct the piece of furniture. In his view, what is interesting “is the act of creating”, since “ working directly with the material allows [...] one to go further, and above all to make discoveries possible”. Thus, his conception of design is one of synthesis: it is about necessity, efficiency and the essential.
