A leading figure in American contemporary art, James Turrell has, since the 1960s, been developing a body of work devoted to the perception of light, space and celestial phenomena. Produced in 1999, the portfolio *Image Stone: Moon Side* translates the artist’s fundamental research into light and perception into the realm of printmaking. The six compositions dedicated to the Moon combine photogravure, lithography and aquatint, creating subtle contrasts between the depth of the blacks and the luminosity of the celestial body. This set is of particular interest as it comprises the complete portfolio in ‘BAT ’ (Bon à tirer) copy, with each sheet signed in pencil by James Turrell. The ‘Bon à tirer’ is the reference copy approved by the artist and the printer prior to the final print run of the edition.
