Catalogue note
Designed in 1961 for Arteluce, the 595 lamp is a particularly fine illustration of Gino Sarfatti’s explorations into the mobility and adaptability of light. The long, flexible arm allows the position of the reflector to be adjusted freely, whilst the compact, weighted base ensures the stability of the whole.
The deliberately minimalist, almost technical construction is characteristic of Sarfatti’s approach: each element serves a specific function whilst simultaneously contributing to the object’s formal expression. The black crackled finish of the base, a feature found in several of the designer’s creations, contrasts with the chrome-plated metal
of the flexible arm and emphasises the lamp’s graphic character.
