The Gruppo NP2 was founded in Turin in 1962 by Giovanni Ceccarelli, known as Nerone (1937–1996), and Giancarlo — or Gianni — Patuzzi. The letters ‘NP’ stand for Nerone + Patuzzi. Other artists and collaborators subsequently gravitated towards the group, notably Piercarlo Ceccarelli, Jolanda Novi, Luigi Marchisotti and Dedalo Montali.
Their approach is particularly relevant to this panel: NP2 sought to break down the barriers between art, sculpture, design and architecture. The group therefore worked on sculptures as well as wall panels, furniture and large-scale architectural installations, guided by the principle that a work should form part of everyday space rather than remain confined to a museum or gallery.
Forme e Superfici
In the late 1960s, this research led to the creation of the Forme e Superfici studios and brand, which enabled, amongst other things, the production of works and architectural elements in limited editions. NP2 then experimented with zinc, copper, aluminium, wood, concrete and marble, using engraving, incision, patina and chemical treatments to transform the surface of the material.
