Arne Jacobsen Egg Armchair Leather and steel First edition by Fritz Hansen — Historic model from the SAS Royal Hotel 1956 H105 cm (41.34 in) D87 cm (34.26 in) HA36 cm (14.18 in) A true icon of 20th-century Danish design, the Egg armchair, designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1956, ranks amongst the most iconic creations in the history of modern furniture. It was originally designed for the interior of the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen – a true architectural and decorative manifesto by Jacobsen – and was produced by Fritz Hansen from 1958 onwards. This example belongs to the very first editions of the model. It features the sought-after characteristic of the early productions: the absence of a separate seat cushion, which was instead integrated directly into the armchair’s structure. Detachable seat cushions would appear a few years later, around 1963. The underside bears Fritz Hansen’s ‘FH’ ink stamp, a mark of authenticity that is particularly significant in identifying this piece as one of the earliest examples. Originally black, the upholstery has now taken on a magnificent dark brown hue, the result of the passage of time and more than six decades of use. This colour evolution is accompanied by a natural, deep and nuanced patina, which bears witness to its history and gives the armchair a truly unique character.
